This site was developed to accompany the National Leaders in Mental Health Programme. Launched in 2018, the Programme is designed to help strategic leaders reflect on and develop their leadership styles, values and ethos to ensure they are leading mentally friendly work environments.

There are many products out there which are aimed at training your staff how to recognise and support mental health difficulties, which is wonderful, provided the strategic work has been put in place. If these investments in training are not supported by a culture and community, the risk (and evidence supports) that these skills are not remembered or embedded into working practice.

We therefore sought to address this need, by developing a suite of courses for those who have the greatest influence over the ethos of the working environment:

The Programmes

For Heads, Principals, senior leaders and Local Authority staff

Social, emotional and mental health difficulties in our pupils are on the rise and getting more complex. Life as a teacher and education leader has changed enormously over the past few years.

From a leadership perspective, the needs of children and young people have changed enormously and leadership styles have had to adapt too.

At the same time, the mental health and wellbeing needs of staff has become more of a priority and employers are being expected to provide far more pastoral support for staff than ever before.

These things combined, mean that even for the most inclusive school, the provision, ethos and culture need to change to meet these needs.

The National Leaders in Social, Emotional and Mental Health Programme combines taught/facilitated sessions with self-studied units and homework activities to implement the learning in their workplace. For those who remember in the National Programme of Specialist Leaders in Behaviour and Attendance, this course is delivered in a similar way.

The Programme is designed to help school, college or local authority staff reflect on their culture, values and ethos, undertaking an audit of their situation and action planning to address their needs. For more information, go to: https://www.rootofit.com/leaders-semh

For designated governors in schools or colleges

Being the Governor responsible for oversight of mental health and wellbeing in an educational setting is a unique challenge.  Not only do you need to monitor the mental health needs of the pupil population, you also have the staff to consider. Combine that with also keeping an eye on the senior staff's wellbeing, its a difficult role.

We recognise that there is no training for this demanding role, and so as part of the National Leaders in SEMH Programme we are delighted to offer a two-day course to meet this need.  The course is delivered centrally, with a gap of a term between the two days, or online over 6 monthly 90 minute webinars.

The programme covers:

  • Expectations of Governing Bodies
  • Requirements of educational settings
  • Staff wellbeing
  • Pupil wellbeing
  • Common mental health difficulties

Each module is delivered through discussion-based activities. There are then follow-up activities for your Governors to do between the programme days to ensure there is immediate impact.

For universities

In a university, there are so many different leads and departments, it can be hard to develop a uniformed approach to leading on social, emotional and mental health.

This 12-month programme is delivered to key university staff on 6 days over the course of a year.

This course is delivered to teams at a single university, we recommend at least one from each faculty (or equivalent), or the programme be delivered to key staff in each faculty - for example faculty lead, academic lead, student support lead, admin staff lead, student representative and department leads. This approach allows the Programme to be tailored to your needs.

Without taking away from any knowledge your teams may already have, the discussion based programme is designed to help identify and begin to implement your strategy, covering:

  • Setting your strategy
  • Auditing and action planning
  • Leadership in mental health
  • Ethos
  • Values and Beliefs
  • Reactions to mental health difficulties & unconscious bias
  • Workplace wellbeing
  • Student wellbeing
  • Common mental health difficulties

Each module is delivered through discussion-based activities, leading onto actions related to your university. There are then follow-up activities for your staff to do between the programme days to ensure there is immediate impact. For more details go to: https://www.rootofit.com/universities
